Who Is Benedicto Charles?

Meet Benedicto Charles

On the 28th of August 2008, a healthy boy full of life called Benedicto Charles was born in a rural village called Nyashimbi in Shinyanga, Tanzania. However, at the tender age of one and a half, this boy full of life began displaying signs of an unknown illness. By the time he turned two, his entire body was covered with this mysterious ailment, leaving everyone baffled.

As he grew older, the illness grew worse as well; affecting different organ systems in his body. Unfortunately, it was already too late when Benedicto Charles finally reached a major medical facility in Dar-es-salaam, thanks to his mother’s tireless efforts in seeking donations.

The illness had progressed into skin cancer, leaving no room for a favourable prognosis. This is when the true nature of his condition was revealed. It was then that a rare condition known as Xeroderma Pigmentosum
was diagnosed as the primary cause of Benedicto Charles’s ailment.

After bravely fighting a deteriorating condition; we lost Benedicto Charles on 14 April 2023.

Benedicto Charles had aspirations.

Benedicto Charles remained hopeful with his mother despite facing adversity, stigma, and overwhelming
challenges until his final moments.

Benedicto Charles served as a beacon of motivation for those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with
him.

He deserved to witness the fruition of his dreams throughout a long and fulfilling life.

He deserved a childhood filled with joy and innocence, just like any other child.

He deserved the chance to grow into a successful adult, but………… he wasn’t able to.

The sad reality is he could have lived to see his dreams come to reality if only a healthcare system truly
conscious and inclusive of rare diseases existed. He is the inspiration for this foundation and the reason
behind its existence. His journey brought deep insights into the heartbreaking reality of individuals who have
rare diseases from financially constrained backgrounds and underserved communities.

We hold onto the belief that his existence on earth had a purpose beyond mere suffering and departure. His
journey held significance and this Nonprofit organization is dedicated to ensuring that his legacy lives to
assist individuals like him who face healthcare system disparities and challenges due to their rare diseases.
By advocating, addressing, and providing sustainable solutions for health system gaps for individuals with
rare diseases; we strive to bring about transformative changes for those affected by these devastating
circumstances.

Although he is no longer with us, his short time on earth has lit a torch that shall illuminate, shed light, and
be a source of power in tackling challenges that individuals like him have to face. A torch that will pave and
ignite a path for others like him, and those to come like him so that they don’t face a fate like his.

Here is to amplifying voices and establishing sustainable solutions for a significantly marginalized
community of individuals with rare diseases to which he belonged. This is dedicated to the incredible,
amazing, and courageous young boy born in the remote areas of Tanzania who didn’t choose to be born with
a rare disease in a world that needs to strive for improved support systems for individuals like him. He
deserved a brighter future, he deserved to be more than just a mere statistic.
