Xeroderma Pigmentosum
Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) light, including sunlight. Individuals with XP have a deficiency in the ability to repair DNA damage caused by exposure to UV rays. This impairment increases the risk of skin cancers and other complications from sunlight exposure.
People with XP often develop severe sunburns and other skin abnormalities after minimal exposure to sunlight. The condition is also associated with a high incidence of skin cancers, including both non-melanoma and melanoma types. Additionally, XP can affect the eyes, leading to problems such as photophobia (sensitivity to light), vision loss, and eye cancers.
At Benedicto Charles Foundation, individuals who have been diagnosed with Xeroderma Pigmentosum are our main focus.
